Legs up the wall? What’s that?

Why would someone want to put their legs up on a wall? Well actually there are tons of reasons! Having your legs up on a wall for just a few minutes allows all the blood from your legs to circulate back towards the heart. This is especially beneficial for those of us who stand for many hours during the day. When we are standing, the blood in our legs has to work against gravity to make up back up towards the heart. It’s common for blood and other fluids to stay stagnant in the legs, this can result in pain and soreness in legs, vericose veins, and reduced overall circulation in the body. Who knew such a simple pose could have such an impact on the body?!
Legs up the wall is really great to do before bedtime, since it has a calming effect on the body and will help you fall asleep faster and stay asleep. Also, at the end of the day is when your legs and feet are going to need it the most. If you’ve ever had a job that requires you to stand for long periods of time, then you’ve probably felt the aches and pains that come with it. Legs up the wall is also known to help reduce menstrual symptoms and is beneficial at any point throughout the reproductive cycle. Men can still benefit from this pose since it helps reduce anxiety and it can release tension in the hip area as spine.
It’s as simple as it sounds, sit next to a wall – even better if your bed is next to a wall, and keep your legs up for a few minutes, and you’ll begin to soak up all the benefits. You can keep your hips right next to the wall, or you can keep a short distance if that’s more comfortable. If your hips are right up the wall, you can prop them up on a pillow to bring them up a little higher. Legs can be straight, slightly bent, together or separated. Find your favorite variation.
